How do you make your own Advent calendar?

December is the month of advent calendars. Well-known brands launch their new advent calendars with the most beautiful products. Opening small boxes from December 1 to Christmas brings a dose of surprises. But how fun is it to make your own Advent calendar? This is easier than you think and we are happy to tell you how to make your own countdown calendar full of gifts.

Start with a blank Advent calendar

Before you start filling an Advent calendar, start by gathering materials such as boxes (large and small), jars, bags or even envelopes. This depends on how big you want to make the calendar and what gifts you put in it. Number the chosen materials from 1 to 24 and decorate them with festive elements. You can decorate empty shoe boxes, sprinkle envelopes with glitter or paint wooden crates in Christmas colors. After making 24 boxes it is time to fill them.

In addition to the smaller materials to make the calendar yourself, you can also use a shelving unit if you have chosen larger gifts. Decorate each box here with wrapping paper or a piece of fabric.

What is fun to put in an Advent calendar

What can you fill an Advent calendar with? This could be anything, and think about this before you choose the materials that the gifts will fit in. As gifts you can think of:

  • Sweets
  • Chocolates
  • Care products
  • Activities
  • Personal messages written on a beautiful card
  • Gift voucher

Place a gift in each box of your Advent calendar. Alternate these nicely and let the tension grow in the recipient. Do you want fewer than 24 gifts? Of course that is also possible! Do you have 20 gifts? Then start filling the Advent calendar on December 4 to reach December 24, the day before Christmas Day.

How did the Advent calendar come about?

The origins of the Advent calendar do not go back very far. This originated in the 19th century in Germany. It started with counting the days until Christmas by chalking pinstripes on the doors. Over the years this has developed into a countdown calendar that we mainly know as an Advent calendar.
