If you've ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at Kolibri Company, this time we will let our cultivation specialist Friso do the talking. Did you know that he has to check the weather forecast every day? He tells you more about his position and daily activities.
Acquaintance Kolibri Company
''Before I started at Kolibri Company, I worked as a painter and found work through an employment agency Kolibri justifiably. I initially worked in the sorting department and later as an order picker. There I picked the right one Kolibri Orchids for the orders.”
New challenge: the cultivation team
''Over time I wanted more of a challenge and joined the cultivation team one day a week. This team is fully committed to the growth of the Kolibri Orchids. I increasingly participated and was allowed to take courses to further develop myself, including obtaining a spraying license. Even though I had no experience, I was still given the opportunity to educate myself. Ultimately, I developed further in this field and started working full-time in the cultivation team."
Work as a cultivation specialist
''As a cultivation specialist, I am concerned with, as the name suggests, the cultivation of... Kolibri Orchids. An important task is to regulate the climate in the nursery, we call this climate control. This includes adjusting screens, aeration systems, temperature and heating settings and lighting in the nursery to create an ideal climate for the nursery. Kolibri Orchids. As a cultivation specialist you don't have a nine to five job, you work breakdown services and you can be called in the middle of the night due to a malfunction. In addition to regulating the climate, I am also involved in controlling diseases and plant resistance and we provide the right nutrition.''
A Kolibri day looks like this...
''The alarm goes off early, so I'm often there before seven in the morning. Every day I start at the climate computer to check the weather of that day, because this affects the climate control in the nursery. With the help of computers, I set the correct settings based on the weather forecast. Then it is time to enter the nursery and walk past different systems. These must be checked to see whether they are working properly and I also measure the water at different values.
I not only check the weather and the systems, I also check the Kolibri Orchids undergo an inspection. We call this scouting. While scouting I walk along the paths with Kolibri Orchids to check whether they meet the quality. ''
What's your favorite Kolibri Orchids?
''One of my favorites is the Kolibri Orchids Lausanne. This has many branches, creating a bouquet of full flowers. This is striking for the cultivation Kolibri Orchids grow slower than the others Kolibri Orchids.”
Most notable day
''Because we work with a smaller team, the holiday period is one that stands out. When a cultivation employee goes on holiday, you take over his duties and you are a lot busier. ''
What developments are there within your position and what do you like most about your job?
''I will soon be taking another course on crop protection and business management. This allows me to direct colleagues to carry out cultivation work. This course gives me a lot of responsibility and helps me grow in my position.
My job gives me energy because every day is diverse and one minute I'm working behind the computer and later I'm walking around the nursery to carry out checks. I recently joined the crop protection front group of Glastuinbouw Nederland. Together with other members we work on improvements and innovations in this field. It is an interesting profession in which you have to be ready for unexpected situations, but in which you also get a lot of freedom."
