Sustainability in the orchid nursery

Sustainable developments are playing an increasingly important role in our society. Also with Kolibri Company we think about the future and work as sustainably as possible with sustainable solutions. We have known for some time that nature has a lot to offer, not only in the form of sensational orchids and plants, but also because of the inner beauty they have to offer.

Sustainability in the Kolibri orchid nursery

In our nurseries, where the growth of our Kolibri orchids and Kolibri Greens takes place, we take our social responsibility. We are committed to environmentally friendly and responsible solutions to the highest possible level. For example, we have the sustainability labels; MPS SQ, MPS GAP, MPS A+, MPS Product Proof. With this we show that the plants grow and bloom in a sustainable way; with respect for people and the environment.

Which sustainable solutions can you find in our orchid nursery?

Our Kolibri We grow orchids, using smart solutions, from the beginning to the moment of shipment. During this growth process, we ensure that processes in the orchid nursery are sustainable. Grower Rob explains our solutions in the video below.

  • Energy savings through The New CultivationOrchid nursery Het Nieuwe Telen and sustainability

The growing process of the orchids starts in a warm department, where it is about 28 degrees. In the warm department we provide our Kolibri Orchids of a tropical climate; hot and humid. It is important to dry the warm section in the orchid nursery in the meantime. It should not get too humid in the warm section, in a too humid climate bacteria can grow, causing diseases.

The application of controlling this moisture balance is called The New Cultivation. We use this to get dry outside air into the orchid nursery to dehumidify the warm department. With the New Cultivation, an energy saving of 15% is achieved and we guarantee an even climate in our orchid nursery.

 

  • LED lamps and sustainability

In the final phase of the growth process, the orchids end up in the finishing department. Here the orchids are provided with sticks. After sticking, the orchids go into the greenhouse for another fourteen days. After these fourteen days, the orchids are ready for shipment. In our breeding department we use LED lamps. In the cultivation department, LED lights ensure that the orchids can grow well without using too much heat. As a result, we need to cool less and use less energy.

Did you know that the Kolibri Orchids are kept in a separate tube for a while to make optimum use of the space in the orchid nursery? This tube is a cultivation vase to set an orchid apart. This protects the orchid's leaves and ensures that the roots do not grow into each other. This is applied in so-called PGCs, which also saves 20% energy and fertilizers. Ultimately, the tube is reused; the vases are disinfected in a specially designed car wash with UV light.

With special outdoor screens at the orchid nursery, we determine ourselves how much daylight the orchids are exposed to. When it is not sunny, the screens can be opened and the orchids enjoy natural light. On sunny days, the outside screens are closed and solar radiation and heat are kept out of the orchid nursery, because certain departments have to stay cool. Thanks to the outside screen, we save energy on climate control of the orchid nursery.

 

  • Solar panels contribute to sustainability Solar panels

On top of the stock hall, where all our Kolibri Home items are stored, you will find no fewer than 950 solar panels. Thanks to 950 solar panels, we generate 285 World Cup. This is sufficient power for no less than 80 households.

 

 

 

  • CO2 from the Botlek

CO2 is a waste product that comes from the Botlek industrial estate. We can use this waste product as a valuable raw material for the growth of our orchids. The orchid converts CO2 into oxygen (O2) through photosynthesis. A win-win situation, because we process the waste product from the Botlek and use it to grow the orchids.

 

  • Feed water recirculation

We recirculate the nutrient water of our orchids. By collecting the water we give the orchids. This water is disinfected and we use it again with the next watering.

 

  • Sustainability through sandwich facades

The outer walls (facades) of our greenhouses are made of sandwich panels. These are the exterior walls of an orchid nursery. Sandwich facades save ten times more energy than glass facades. These facades keep the heat in the orchid nursery more easily. In this way we ensure that less energy is used to heat the orchid nursery.

We have our own combined heat and power generator (CHP) and use it to generate electricity for lighting in the orchid nursery. We use the residual heat released in this process to heat the orchid nursery.
